Chinchillas and Their Homes

Chinchillas, as their natural habitats are in the mountains, have naturally thick fur. This is especially important when deciding where they should be placed inside our homes. Make sure not to place them in drafty areas, keep it cool, quiet and dry but not wet.

It is best if the area or cage is considerably large, at least it should be 24 x 24 inches. It should also be a tall cage wherein we can place inside an array of branches, ladders, or shelves where the chinchilla may climb on. Avoid using a plastic cage for these pets are likely to chew it and destroy the plastic easily. This would be a sure way to allow your pet to escape from your home.

In chinchilla care guides, it is said that wire cages are best, especially ones with pull-out trays. This kind of trays is also preferred by pet owners as cages with this feature are easier to clean. A problem that comes from these cages are that have wire floorings as well, which are nice for cleaning but not for chinchilla’s feet. It is best that there is a wooden platform inside the cage for the chinchilla to rest on.

As they sleep during the day, the cage should be placed in a quiet area where our activities would not disturb their sleep. As previously noted, the place should be cool without being drafty, and direct sunlight should also be avoided as this could cause the chinchillas to overheat. During the summer, if you have air-conditioning, it is advised that you use it. If not, place some ice cubes near the area to freshen to lessen the heat.
