Chinchilla Pregnancy

Chinchilla Pregnancy

Pregnancy for chinchilla pets is hardly noticeable, especially for first-time mothers. Do not be shocked if you suddenly find your chinchilla already weaning a litter if you leave it in a cage with a male for at least a few hours. Like human females, many chinchillas go through mood swings during their pregnancy, be sure to pay extra attention to their wishes and do not force them to do things they’d rather not.

After 3 months of conception, you may notice a slight change in your female. Her nipples may be getting redder and longer. Before and during the first months of pregnancy, these are very small and very hard to locate. By delivery, you may be able to actually see them, almost as long as her hair. You also might notice a slight increase in weight and her belly growing rounder and firmer. First time mothers are harder to place as they usually have smaller kits and at times only go through single births. One last sign is that she switches to unusual sleeping positions. This however cannot be a sure signal that your female has become a mommy-in-waiting. There is a possibility that they are just trying to keep from the heat, exhausted, or just wanting a change in position.

According to research and care guides about chinchilla, the kits go through about 6 stages inside their mother’s womb. These are the 30 days, 45 days, 60 days, 80 days, 100 days and 111 days. During the first stage, your kit is around .1 grams. The weight and size increases per phase until finally at 111 days, the kit has become large enough, weighting 45 grams.
