Breeding Basics

Do not breed them without knowing their pedigree. On that note, it is ill-advised that you breed rescued or store-bought chins. If you really want to breed chinchillas, we suggest you get them from a respectable breeder that has full knowledge of their background. Once you’ve chosen your pair, place them in separate but side-by-side cages. This will allow them to familiarize with each other and lessen the possible aggression. A minimum of two weeks must be spent on just this activity. After this certain time frame, allow them to play outside the cage together.

This is where you can gauge if they are ready to be mated. If they are still aggressive towards one another, add a few more weeks of sit-and-stare-in-separate-cages are needed. If aggression continues, you may possibly have an incompatible pair.

Once they are no longer aggressive with each other, place the female chinchilla in the male’s cage. Doing it the other way around will be foolish as the female is more territorial and aggressive thus possibly ending the chance of their mating. Check if they are comfortable with one another. They might just start playing around a bit.

The heat cycle of a chinchilla comes every 25-38 days. This starts as early as 6 months and as late as 8 months, it is advised though that they only be allowed to breed when they reach 10 months. Unless you’ve witnessed their mating, there is little evidence to tell you of this occurrence. This evidence is something called an estrus plug, or a mating plug, It is a white and waxy thing that is around 1 ½ inches long. This is only expelled after mating so seeing this in the cage is a sure way to know that you’ll be expecting a litter soon.

After their mating, count 111 days. This is the average number of days it will take for your female to birth her young. Do not fret though if she births early or late, it’s still normal as long as she gives birth. After delivery, give your pet some cranberry juice. This will allow the mother to replenish her lost vitamins and nutrients. Another reminder that you should not forget is that after 72 hours or three days, your female will go into heat again so do not forget to remove the male from the area.
